Reviews for Restaurant BABA KAYA - One Malaysian Cuisine
Review highlights
Based on 4,084 reviewsRestoran Baba Kaya • One Malaysian Cuisine is recognized for its charming and nostalgic ambiance, reminiscent of an old-fashioned home, often enhanced by picturesque riverside views. Customers consistently praise the quality and flavor of the food, highlighting signature dishes such as kaya toast, Nyonya laksa, and rendang chicken for their authentic and well-prepared taste. The presentation of dishes is noted for its care and creativity, adding to the overall dining experience. Service reviews show some variability; while many find the staff polite and efficient in seating guests promptly, others mention a lack of warmth or delayed drink orders during busy periods. The establishment primarily serves breakfast and lunch, with some suggestions for extended hours. Minor critiques include limited restroom facilities and occasional inconsistencies with specific food items like roti canai.
The staff were not very friendly. There were no smiles or greetings. The ambiance was nice, like being in an old-fashioned home. The food was served with care. The plating was beautiful, with some dishes and drinks garnished with flowers. They only serve breakfast and lunch. It would be even better if they opened in the afternoon and evening, as the location is right by the river.
The food is very good and amazing. Staff are very polite and friendly. They provide seating very fast as well and we had 10 people. The toast and money bags are the bomb. I feel like should visit this place if they do have a chance. The only issue is the drinks arrive later than the food which I understand due to overwhelming orders. However, I feel like that could improve and the place will be perfect if they improve on that. Place to visit and eat everyone.
Baba Kaya is a charming spot with lovely, tasty dishes. We tried the signature toast, Nyonya curry laksa, and nasi lemak — all delicious and full of flavor. The 3-layer tea is refreshing, and the homemade apom balik is a sweet highlight, served in a unique way from a basket lowered by rope from a balcony — a fun and memorable touch. Toilets are very tiny and not suitable for ladies.
This cafe have a quaint feel with some very instagramable corners. Came on Malaysia Day and there's no need to wait for a table. I thought that's all the hype but surprisingly food is quite ok. Servers are polite and friendly.
Quite crowded but can able a table fast though. Can enjoy makan with the view of Melaka River. Frankly, the foods here really delicious beb. The rendang chicken was so nicely cooked, so flavorful and tender. The nyonya laksa was power too. The kaya toast was nice The only food not so nice was roti canai, it was quite hard, hard to chew for some.
Great experience, got there early so not much of a queue. Got to sit on the balcony offering amazing views. Had trouble ordering since their menu was online. Staff helped with getting me wifi access. Prices were reasonable for the portions and everything tasted great. The signature prawn nyonya laksa curry was fantastic, best so far in malaysia. The prawns were more shrimp though. More coconut forward notes, lighter spice. The nasi lemak twin tower ayam rendang was amazing except the chicken was too dry and barely warm. Would have given 5 stars if they got that right. The apom balikpapan corn was a nice little bite. All in all a great experience. Recommend coming early so the wait isn't as bad.
Environment and vibes are the best! Doesn’t feel like nyonya but hipster spot. Food wise, the nasi lemak was a little disappointed as the sambal is not as flavourful. However the plating were great. The curry laksa was yum and the best so far. Soft boiled eggs are good too. Coffee slightly too sweet. They sell apam balik the old tradition way. Did not have to wait when we went around 1pm.
At Baba Kaya, I enjoyed a refreshing honey lemon drink that was a perfect antidote to the hot weather—crisp, tangy lemon balanced beautifully with sweet honey, served ice-cold for instant relief. The food was decent, with dishes like the Nyonya Curry Laksa and Baba Kaya Signature Toast offering authentic Malaysian flavors, though some items, like the Nasi Lemak, were flavorful but occasionally served lukewarm. The riverside setting and cozy, heritage-inspired ambiance added charm, making it a pleasant spot for a casual meal. Service was friendly, but the food quality was average—tasty but not exceptional. Worth a visit for the vibe and drinks
